PaulI’ve been with the Big Issue from day one – nearly twelve years ago now. I am the only original one left.
It started because I used to do a heap of voluntary work here and there, until one day a social worker asked me if I wanted to do any extra work. I said yes, thinking it was more voluntary work.
So I was taken to Wesley Church in the city to a place called The Big Issue, which later on I found out was a magazine. I thought I would be just selling them to help homeless people out, you know, and that all the money went straight to them.
When I found out that I was working for myself, I said ‘cool, this will do me!’ That’s when I started and I haven’t looked back.
I’ve got a good relationship with the office people, especially the vendor coordinators. They help you in anyway they can, you know, if you need accommodation, financial guidance or something like that.
There’s a lot of guys down there who need assistance.
Relating to people, making new friends, making money – I love everything about The Big Issue.
