It’s the fun things you do and the people you meet. That’s what’s kept me working with youth for over 30 years. I mean, I lay claim to being a professional sportsman because I was paid to play basketball for six years as part of an anger management group for young people.
There has been so many good times.
I remember taking kids camping. One trip I was mucking around, and having never abseiled in my life, I asked the instructor if I could go down the rock face-forward. I never dreamed he would say yes. So there I was 60 meters up, being egged on by twenty kids. I was scared half to death, but the fear of those kids out of control for the rest of the weekend was greater than the fear of potentially killing myself, so I did it!.
I meet people who say, oh you’re magnificent for doing this, but I couldn’t do their job. I really enjoy what I do, managing Impact Support Services .
I ran into a kid a few years ago who had been doing it really tough. We chatted for a couple of hours, and it was great to see him progress. Now he has a job, a car, is making the house repayments, he’s doing brilliantly.
That to me is just fantastic, and I guess that’s why I do this work.
