After really enjoying helping out a young boy with severe cerebral palsy, I decided to look for similar kind of work.
I got a job at EW Tipping in Ballarat working in a house with mainly guys in wheelchairs. I loved that. Saw more of the ability than the disability.
They were advertising a team leader role in Swan Hill. It was a chance to get out of town and promote myself professionally. So I packed up and here I am.
There are five people living in the shared house I support, including Mary. With so many of us living in each other’s pockets, of course there are going to be ups and downs. There are rules and consequences just like any other house.
They’re all great people when they want to do stuff, and when they don’t that’s when the job skills kick in.
Get the respect of the guys and treat them how you want to be treated and you’ll just have a good time.
I love watching the guys find out for themselves how much they can do. I love that.
It is a good job. It is a rewarding job, I must admit.
