My mum was doing water aerobics down at the leisure centre and picked up a pamphlet asking for volunteers to help out with a swimming program run by Scope. I was unemployed at the time, so I got involved.
I help out with SKAB the Special Kids Aquatic Program on Monday night and I also go swimming and walking with adults, like Ben, who need assistance to do these activities.
Sometimes I help with other activities as well like having a barbeque in the park, going to Healesville Sanctuary, the circus when it comes to town.
After a couple of months volunteering, Scope offered me some part-time work, providing some social support for a male around my age. We do guy activities like play video games, or go out. He loves public transport so we might spend a day in Pakenham, that kind of thing.
Now work is paying for me to do a Certificate IV in Disability Work. Having some formal training has really helped.
I love social interaction, I love talking to people, I love interacting with people, so that’s what I love about my job.
