Basically it’s about people’s quality of life. At Yooralla, we provide the direct support necessary to ensure people are included in their local communities, getting them to participate in life just like anyone else.
Sometimes people behave in a way that is of concern. When other support fails we may need to provide what we call restrictive intervention to help them get over a difficult patch, like mechanical restraints and seclusion.
In the past people who have been institutionalised have been on medication for years and years. Now we reduce the level of restriction as much as possible. It’s my job to monitor the interventions we use and report them to government.
It’s all about improving practice, learning better ways to do things.
The joys of the job and the satisfaction are gained from just improving practice and seeing the good things that are happening around you in the lives of the people with disabilities.
