I work at Quantum Support Services , helping to find housing for young people like Victor who have no place to live.
To transport them into independent living, I try to link them into networks and get them heading back into society again. Their support period is usually from thirteen weeks plus.
There’s often several factors why these kids need a place to live, they’ve been evicted, or being asked to leave friends or family, drug and alcohol abuse, sometimes financial barriers or mental illness.
Many of the people I see haven’t got any references to help, and may have burnt their bridges in the area. Typically, no one’s really willing to give them a chance.
I take kids to estate agents, help them fill out paperwork. It’s pretty flexible how we can help, trying to get them appointments with doctors, educational resources and programs.
If their living skills need to be enhanced, I can take them shopping, teach them how to cook a meal, take them to Vinnies and the Salvos to pickup household items.
It’s so good, once you get someone housed, heading the right way back on track – and you can really see it – it’s pretty rewarding.
