Single aged pensioners will be hit hardest by massive hikes in the price of water eight times the rate of inflation from July 1, according to new figures published today by the Victorian Council of Social Service.

Chief Executive of VCOSS Cath Smith said single aged pensioners who own their own home will be stung with an 18 per cent annual rise in the cost of water from July 1 – more than any other group – unless the Victorian Government removed the cap on the water concession.

“Unless the cap on the water concession is removed in the May budget some of Victoria’s most vulnerable households, like single aged pensioners, will be hit with alarming increases in the price of water eight times the rate of inflation.”

“Victoria’s most vulnerable households must be assisted to maintain an affordable supply of essential water.”
