Australia’s not-for-profit sector employs nearly 900,000 people and contributes $43 billion to the nation’s GDP – six times more than the mining sector – according to the Victorian Council of Social Service.
Chief Executive of VCOSS Cath Smith said, “Most people in Australia will benefit from a community service at some point in their lives but what’s less known is the enormous economic impact the sector has on Australia. The sector employs nearly ten times the number of people in the mining sector and contributes six times more than mining to the nation’s gross domestic product.”
To attract new talent to Victoria’s community sector, VCOSS is “Showcasing the Community Sector” at the National Careers & Employment Expo at Melbourne’s Convention & Exhibition Centre on May 21-22.
“There are many exciting careers and challenges in the not-for-profit sector for people wanting to dedicate their lives to helping others like helping to find housing for young people, or working with people with a disability,” said Ms Smith.
“Job seekers are often unaware of the rewarding careers available in the community service sector. Our showcase at the National Careers & Employment Expo is a great way to learn what’s out there and what exciting career prospects lie ahead for you,” added Ms Smith.
