The Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS) today applauded Premier John Brumby’s commitment to fully fund the outcome of the national pay equity case for the community sector in Victoria.
“This is great news for the community sector,” said VCOSS CEO Cath Smith. “It tells tens of thousands of workers in Victoria that their work is strongly valued.”
“It also delivers certainty for VCOSS member organisations, in knowing that when pay rises are granted, they will be able to maintain their staffing and the diverse range of services and programs to vulnerable and disadvantaged Victorians.”
The community sector across Australia has been calling on all governments to commit to full funding of pay increases that result from the equal pay case launched in March for social and community service and disability sector workers. A decision from Fair Work Australia is expected late this year, or early 2011.
“Premier Brumby’s very welcome announcement provides an opportunity for the other states and Commonwealth funding bodies to also commit to funding the outcomes of the national case,” Ms Smith said.
“With Victoria facing a state election this year, we are also calling on the Opposition and other parties contesting seats to make a similar commitment, to support the future development of this vital sector.”
UPDATE: Subsequent to this media release, Liberal Leader, Ted Bailleau announced he will match the Premier’s commitment to fund the national pay equity case. VCOSS applauds this Opposition announcement.
