Today’s announcement of the provision of an extra 330 wheelchair accessible taxi licences for Melbourne by the Victorian Government is welcome news for people living with a disability, says the Victorian Council of Social Service.
But more needs to be done to guarantee that people with a disability have equal access to taxi services as other Victorians.
Acting Chief Executive Officer of VCOSS Carolyn Atkins said, “People living with a disability tend to rely heavily on taxis to get from A to B, and we’re pleased more taxis in the Melbourne region will be accessible to wheelchair users.”
“However there’s still some way to go before we can say that every person living with a disability has equal access to all modes of public transport as other Victorians.”
