‘Victoria’s landmark commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions by one fifth is an important step that demonstrates real leadership on climate change’, says Kate Colvin, Policy and Public Affairs Manager of the Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS).
‘Reducing our carbon emissions and moving to cleaner energy is fundamental to a safer climate for all Victorians.
‘With the right concessions framework and assistance to workers and vulnerable communities these decisions will enable Victoria to transition to a cleaner energy future that is fairer for everyone.’
‘VCOSS commends the Victorian Government for enshrining equity as a key principle in the Climate Bill. This will be critical to ensuring implementation plans achieve the best outcomes for all Victorians.’
VCOSS also commends the focus in the White Paper on housing standards. For this policy to benefit low income renters, VCOSS will continue to highlight the need for minimum rental standards and significant investment in retrofitting public housing.’
‘VCOSS also welcomes the Government’s commitment to assisting small towns and affected communities such as the Latrobe Valley to adapt’.
‘The Victorian community is living on the front line of climate change – dealing with unprecedented drought, heatwaves and bushfires.’
‘The commitments announced today show the Victorian Government has heard our community’s clear message on climate change – that the time for action is now.’
