Decent not dodgy
The 'Decent not dodgy' campaign calls on the Victorian Government to reform the Victorian Residential Tenancies Act (1997) to include basic standards for rental properties. This aims to ensure that all renters are guaranteed a home that is healthy, safe and affordable to run.
To find out more about the condition of Victorian rental properties, VCOSS and Tenants Union of Victoria volunteers surveyed 116 rental properties open for inspection in 54 suburbs across Melbourne and Geelong.
We found:
- 14 per cent of properties with 2 of the following characteristics: no heating, visible lack of weather proofing, extensive mould, unsafe (no electrical safety switch or deadlocks)
- 39 per cent of properties had no or only some deadlocks on external doors
- 33 per cent of properties with no safety switch
- 11 per cent of properties with visible lack of weather proofing
- 20 per cent of properties with visible and extensive mould (bathroom only)
- 19 per cent of properties not connected to gas
The full Decent not dodgy report is now available.
VCOSS’ full policy position on rental standards is documented in A Future Focused Housing Standard.
