Accessible Public Transport Watch Project
The Accessible Transport Watch Project is a nine-month project that aims to investigate, monitor and report on the accessibility of transport in Victoria. The project is a joint initiative of the Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS), the Disability Resources Centre (DRC) and Disability Advocacy and Information Service (DAIS) and has been generously supported by the Reichstein Foundation and the Helen McPherson Smith Trust.
The project involves two stages. The first stage involved a first hand account of people with disabilities and their experiences in accessing public transport. The information was gathered using a series of six surveys about Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses along with regional local buses and V/Line trains and coaches to form a report known as the Accessible Public Transport Watch Report. Stage two of the report is monitoring and reporting on the findings of the report through a number of working groups across the state.
The report will be used for advocacy to improve public transport services with transport operators and the Victorian Government along with increasing general awareness in the community of accessibility of transport in Victoria. Findings of the report have also been inputted into the review of the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002.
