Help Clients to Develop Awareness and Responsibility

How to Help Clients to Develop Awareness and Responsibility by Applying a GROW Coaching Model

The GROW model of coaching offers a practical framework for working with clients or others with two powerful outcomes – increasing the level of awareness and increasing the level of perceived responsibility. In this session, we will outline the differences between coaching and other modalities of intervention, then describe the practical steps involved in applying the GROW model. We will cover a number of scenarios and examples specific to family dispute resolution (FDR) and describe possible responses that could be used in either a funded or private practice setting.

Learning outcomes

-Understand the differences between coaching and other interventions that can be used in FDR practice.
-Understand the GROW model of coaching and how it can be applied.
-Awareness of options for using GROW coaching in both one to one as well as joint mediation sessions.
-Understand how the GROW model can be used as a directive intervention in specific areas, including reducing conflict with the other parent or increasing flexibility in negotiating financial settlement.

About the presenter:

Simon Goode has a degree in Psychology, MBA, Graduate Diploma of Family Dispute Resolution, Certificate IV Training and Assessment and is a nationally-accredited mediator as well as an accredited FDR practitioner (FDRP). Simon originally worked in the post-separation space in the Parenting Orders Program, working with parents and children from court-ordered families. These cases often involved a number of highly complex needs and presenting issues. He completed training and accreditation as an FDRP in an effort to offer an ‘early intervention’ for these families to prevent things from becoming so toxic and ingrained. He has worked as a practitioner in a number of funded services, as manager of the Newcastle Family Relationship Centre, manager of the Relationships Australia (RA) Mediation Service with RA NSW, then also as Program Leader for mediation and FDR programs with Relationships Australia Victoria. These days, Simon focuses on FDR and workplace mediation in private practice, as well as providing clinical supervision and business coaching for FDRPs wanting to set up and grow their own businesses.
