Managing power station closures

Hazelwood Power Station

In October 2016, the Australian Senate initiated an Inquiry into policy mechanisms to encourage the retirement of coal-fired power stations and to “ensure minimal community and individual impact” from the closures.

In this submission, VCOSS describes the closure of Australia’s coal-fired power plants as “inevitable” and argues for:

  • The adoption of place-based approaches to assist local communities;
  • A strengthening of health and community services, and;
  • The increased provision of education, training and job opportunities.
